Biography
Dr. Sherrell is a Georgia native from Covington. He received his bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in chemistry from Georgia Southern University. He then attended the Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University where he obtained his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. Dr. Sherrell has always had an interest in medicine as well as dentistry, so when he was introduced to the specialty of oral medicine in dental school, he was instantly drawn to pursue it given its scope as a bridge between medicine and dentistry.
Dr. Sherrell completed postgraduate training with an Advanced Dental Education Program in Oral Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine also obtaining a Certificate in Oral Medicine from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. During his final year of residency, he was elected as the Chief Resident in the Department of Oral Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
After residency, Dr. Sherrell began his career in academics serving as an Assistant Professor in Oral Medicine at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry. There he taught students clinically and didactically in the field of oral medicine serving as the course director for the oral medicine courses. Dr. Sherrell established a new clinical practice devoted to oral medicine which was transitioned into the medical center to better serve the large number of complex oncology patients managed in the practice. He also spearheaded the telemedicine patient admissions process during the peak of the pandemic to allow for greater access to oral healthcare services for patients during the shutdown and beyond.
Dr. Sherrell joined our group in August of 2021 and practices at the East Cobb and Cumberland offices.
Dr. Sherrell’s practice focuses on treating patients with: 1) oral mucosal disorders including canker sores, autoimmune and inflammatory conditions (lichen planus, pemphigus, pemphigoid), oral contact allergies, oral infections (bacterial, fungal and viral), and growths or lesions in the oral cavity; 2) orofacial pain disorders including TMJ disorders, burning mouth syndrome, atypical facial pain and neuralgias; 3) salivary gland disorders including dry mouth and salivary gland dysfunction; 4) sleep apnea and dental sleep medicine; 5) oral oncology services including pre-cancer of the lip and oral cavity (leukoplakia/erythroplakia, oral submucous fibrosis), post-treatment surveillance of oral cancer, pre-treatment oral evaluations (prior to head and neck radiation, stem cell transplant, solid organ transplant, anti-resorptive therapies) and management of cancer treatment oral complications (mucositis, xerostomia, trismus, graft vs. host disease, and osteoradionecrosis).
Dr. Sherrell is a member of the American Academy of Oral Medicine, the American Dental Association, and the Georgia Dental Association. He has published articles in medical and dental journals relating to the field of oral medicine. He has also presented posters at the American Academy of Oral Medicine Annual Meetings and has given multiple continuing education lectures in the field of oral medicine to dentists, dental specialists, and other healthcare professionals.
Dr. Sherrell resides in Roswell and enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, spending time outdoors hiking, and listening to good music.
